McKool Smith principal Nick Mathews has been recognized as a "Rising Star" in intellectual property by Law360. This annual feature honors the legal industry’s top legal talent under the age of 40. To compile the 2020 listing, Law360 reviewed more than 1,300 submissions from over 80 law firms to select an elite group of lawyers whose legal accomplishments transcend their age.
Over the past year, Nick has contributed to a number of high-profile courtroom achievements on behalf of global telecommunications giant Ericsson, including helping to secure a complete defense verdict in a breach of FRAND case brought by HTC Corporation and HTC America, Inc., and helping to secure a Federal Circuit victory in the company’s closely watched FRAND licensing dispute against TCL Communications.

Nick routinely handles matters alleging competitive violations in patent licensing related to standard essential patents subject to FRAND or RAND obligations. He represents clients in patent infringement matters across a wide range of technology fields, including cellular communications, speech coding, video compression, and medical devices. Nick is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and has experience prosecuting patents and in inter partes review proceedings.
