McKool Smith principal Douglas A. Cawley has been named a 2015 “Trial Ace” by Law360. The special feature recognizes the nation’s top 50 trial lawyers, which Law360 describes as “champions in the courtroom, leaders in their law firms and heroes to their clients.”
In selecting Mr. Cawley as one of the country’s leading trial lawyers, Law360 notes that his “list of victories is replete with multimillion-dollar verdicts won against some of the deepest pockets in the corporate world,” and that “you can chalk [his] more than $1 billion in patent victories up to his way of wooing juries.” The article also discusses how Mr. Cawley's “honesty in the courtroom has earned him a positive reputation with judges.” Mr. Cawley has secured victories against some of the titans of the technology industry by “stripping complex patent terms down in a way that is understandable.” One such victory is a $200 million jury verdict for i4i Limited Partnership against Microsoft. The verdict is reportedly one of the largest, if not the largest, patent infringement verdict to be affirmed by the Supreme Court. Mr. Cawley has served as lead counsel in six patent infringement trials that have earned "Top 100 Verdict" rankings by the National Law Journal and VerdictSearch in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2013.
