Dallas Principal Douglas Cawley was awarded Texas Lawyer's 2017 Professional Excellence Award for Distinguished Leadership on September 6 at a ceremony in Dallas. This honor recognizes lawyers who have made their mark on the legal profession in the Lone Star State and are impact players in the Texas legal community. The September issue of Texas Lawyer includes a feature article (available here) in which Doug explains what leadership means to him, "In complex litigation being a leader means building consensus among the client and the legal team. This frequently involves not only lawyers in my firm but co-counsel in other firms. We are constantly faced with difficult and novel issues, and it's essential that someone chart a path to a common goal and help everyone get there."
For more than forty years, Doug has been engaged in the trial of complex cases and has handled major intellectual property matters throughout the United States and across the globe. He has secured six “Top 100 Verdicts” that have amounted to more than $1 billion in verdicts for the firm’s clients. Mr. Cawley has been recognized as a “Trial Ace” by Law360, which noted that his “list of victories is replete with multimillion-dollar verdicts won against some of the deepest pockets in the corporate world,” and that “you can chalk [his] more than $1 billion in patent victories up to his way of wooing juries.” He has also been recognized as the Dallas "Patent Lawyer of the Year" by Best Lawyers, "Outstanding IP Litigator (Texas)" by Managing IP, and "Litigator of the Year (South)" by Benchmark Litigation. Mr Cawley is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the American Bar Association Section on Intellectual Property Law.
